Division B: Kristy Zurbrick Enjoys First Division Win After 22 Years and 86 Tournament Appearances
Kristy Zurbrick’s long wait ended in Division B with a first-place finish that was 22 years in the making.
In her 86th tournament appearance, Zurbrick claimed her first tournament division win, finishing at 5.0-2.0 with a +291 spread. She edged Daniel Stock, who also finished 5.0-2.0, by 33 spread points to take the top spot and the $150 first-place prize.
The final standings came down to a tight race at the top, a meaningful last-round result, and one of the best stories a tournament can produce: a veteran player breaking through after years of steady competition.
Zurbrick takes first place on spread
Zurbrick entered the final results with the same win-loss record as Stock, but her stronger point spread decided the division. Her last game was a convincing 451-346 win over Doug Szymkowiak, a result that gave her enough room to stay ahead in the final table.
That margin mattered. Stock finished only 33 spread points behind Zurbrick, at +258, after a final-game loss to John Healy. In a division this close, every turn, every endgame choice, and every point left on the board carried weight.
The top three finishers were:
Place | Player | Record | Spread | Prize |
1 | Kristy Zurbrick | 5.0-2.0 | +291 | $150 |
2 | Daniel Stock | 5.0-2.0 | +258 | $75 |
3 | John Healy | 4.0-3.0 | +171 | $50 |
Zurbrick’s win stands out not only because of the final numbers, but because of the path behind them. Tournament play can be a long grind, especially in divisions where players are closely matched and small decisions decide the standings. For Zurbrick, the breakthrough arrived after more than two decades of showing up, competing, and staying in the field.
After 22 years of tournament play, Kristy Zurbrick took her first tournament division win in her 86th tournament appearance.
That context turns a narrow standings victory into the headline of the division.
The final round shaped the podium
The last game listed for each player tells the story of how the final order settled.
Zurbrick helped her own case with a 105-point win over Szymkowiak. Stock, by contrast, dropped his final game 429-371 to Healy. That result lifted Healy into third place at 4.0-3.0 and gave him the final place prize.
Healy’s win was important on two levels. It secured his own podium finish, and it denied Stock the chance to finish 6.0-1.0, which would have given Stock undisputed first place. Instead, Stock remained tied with Zurbrick on wins and lost the division on spread.
