As many of you may be aware, Hasbro (the owner of the SCRABBLE trademark in the U.S. and Canada) has decided to terminate funding for adult club and tournament play of SCRABBLE effective January 1, 2010. As a result, while the National SCRABBLE Association is working cooperatively and providing certain resources to help in the formation of a new organization, it has decided that it will only organize and support school SCRABBLE going forward.
To enable club and tournament play to continue in an organized fashion, several players have worked together under the leadership of Chris Cree and John Chew to form the North American SCRABBLE Players Association, or NASPA. NASPA will be responsible for sanctioning SCRABBLE tournaments and clubs, maintaining membership rolls, and certifying Directors, effective July 1.
This means that, if you wish to play in sanctioned SCRABBLE tournaments on or after July 1, 2009 in the U.S. or Canada, you must be a member of NASPA.
NASPA membership can be obtained by mail or online. For more information about NASPA, or to apply for membership online, please visit www.scrabbleplayers.org. If you would like to mail in your membership, you may download and print out the membership form below.
